Chowrasta: Significance of the Name

Darjeeling’s famous public square is known as Chowrasta, which is located in West Bengal. The name “Chowrasta” comes from two words: “Chow” meaning four and “Rasta” meaning roads. It translates into a place where four roads meet.

Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park

This zoo is situated next to Chowrasta and has many animals of the Himalayas. Residents include red pandas, snow leopards and other rare animals. The zoo’s mission is conservation of these species.It is an amusing place for children where they can also learn something new.

Peace Pagoda

The Peace Pagoda is a beautiful white structure located near Chowrasta. It was constructed for the objective of promoting peace and harmony. There are numerous viewing points from where one gets panoramic views of Darjeeling as well as the nearby mountains. 

Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (Toy Train)

How to find the way to Chowrasta from the Railway Station?

To get to Chowrasta from Darjeeling railway station, you have many options:

By Taxi

One can take a taxi from the station and drive to Chowrasta. At the entrance of the station you will easily get taxis. The trip is short and therefore comfortable; it typically lasts between 10 to 15 minutes.

By Walking

The walk takes approximately 20-30 minutes depending on your pace. The path does not pose any difficulties, plus you can enjoy beautiful views of Darjeeling along this route. Just go up the main road.

By Shared Jeep

Shared jeeps are another option for getting there. They are less expensive than cabs and you can find them near the station. In most cases they stop close enough to Chowrasta so that you could complete your journey on foot.
